Transport sector urges EU to safeguard funding

The International Road transport Union (IRU) and industry partners have signed an open letter urging EU Member States and the European Commission to preserve and strengthen dedicated European transport funding in the next EU budget. The call comes as discussions intensify on the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework review, which will shape the bloc’s budget priorities for the coming years.

In a letter to the Ministers of the General Affairs Council and the Economic and Financial Affairs Council, IRU and road transport partners urge EU Member States and the European Commission to maintain and enhance a robust, dedicated European transport funding instrument in the next EU budget.

IRU EU Director Raluca Marian said, “A well-structured and centrally coordinated EU funding mechanism enables transport operators to make long-term investment plans, foster innovation, and improve overall sector efficiency.

“Specifically for our sector, this means access to critical funds necessary for core projects such as fleet greening, skilling and reskilling drivers, and improving working conditions, including the development of more safe and secure truck parking areas.”

“At a time when the EU expects our sector to make key investments, we, in turn, expect the EU to play its part in supporting these efforts,” she added.

The letter expresses deep concern over the European Commission’s proposal to shift most EU transport funding to National Single Plans. It warns that this move could fragment investment, weaken connectivity, and undermine Europe’s competitiveness, resilience, and military preparedness.

The signatories stress the need for an EU transport funding instrument to strengthen Europe’s industrial competitiveness, enhance economic, social, and territorial cohesion, secure the supply of critical raw materials, safeguard supply chain sovereignty, and support the transition to net-zero.

To secure the future of Europe’s transport network, a stable, long-term investment strategy with centralised EU coordination is necessary.
