IRHA highlights gridlock at Dublin Port Tunnel

The operators Dublin Port Tunnel are causing traffic gridlock and disrupting supply chains because of upgrade work at the tunnel, the Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA) has claimed.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) says the work will result in less tunnel closures, but the IRHA says the new technology in the tunnel will leave Ireland “stuck in the past”.

TII says the upgrade work is being carried out to modernise a number of aspects of its operation, including its CCTV and control systems.

To facilitate the upgrade the tunnel will close at night 18 times in October, 16 times in November and 12 times in December. The closures will take place Monday to Thursday between 9.30pm to 4.30am.

A spokesperson for the IRHA says the closures are causing traffic chaos, disruption to supply chains and causing drivers to their Drivers’ Hours.
