FTA Ireland is calling on government to support the freight distribution sector following a three cent per litre increase in excise duty on road diesel at the end of July.
The most recent increase means that 9 per cent per litre has been added to the cost of diesel since the beginning of the year.
Speaking on RTE radio this week, FTA Ireland CEO, Aidan Flynn spoke about the implications of increased cost of fuel for the distribution sector.
Mr Flynn said that essential freight distribution business must be supported through new tax measures that moderate the increased cost of fuel and support transition to alternative fuels.
He also called for a review of the Diesel Rebate Programme, and said the sector wants the treatment of Excise Duty on HVO amended to bring into line with road diesel.
Mr Flynn also wants the introduction of a scrappage scheme to assist upgrade the fleet to newer Euro VI vehicles.
