Independent TD, Verona Murphy, the former president of the Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA) has been elected as the new Ceann Comhairle of the 34th Dail.
The Wexford TD becomes the first woman to hold the role. Her election paves the way for a new government made up of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and the Regional Independent Group.
Ms Murphy was elected on the third count when transfers from outgoing ceann comhairle Seán Ó Fearghaíl were distributed, pushing her over the quota of 87.
Ms Murphy was elected President of the IRHA in May 2015, and held the role until November 2019.
