Toll
increases will impact on economy - Quinn
The Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA) has predicted
that toll increases on the M50 motorway in Dublin, will
impact on the whole economy, through dearer imports and
exports. "Ireland is the most truck-dependent country
in Europe and this is effectively a tax on imports and exports.
Imports and exports are going to take up the slack in the
economy left by the construction industry downturn, the
country needs us to do that work and anything that makes
that job difficult, like the toll, should be discouraged,"
IRHA president Jimmy Quinn commented.
Quinn says that hauliers should be exempt from tolls. Licensed
commercial vehicles are the vehicles doing the business
for Ireland Plc and they shouldn't be treated the same as
motorists who have discretion about how they move about",
he added.
