Illegal
use of rebated diesel reaching endemic proportions - Quinn
The
Irish Road Haulage Association has claimed that the
illegal use of rebated diesel in the unlicensed haulage
sector has reached "endemic" proportions.
IRHA president Jimmy Quinn speaking to International
Freighting Weekly said that as many as in every five
trucks on the road are operating without a license.
Commenting on the recent crackdown on illegal operators
Quinn is quoted as saying: "The fuel crisis precipitated
an enormous upheaval in the transport sector here as
it did all over Europe." "The government came
up with a suite of solutions, one of which was to get
rid of the unlicensed sector, because it seems that
it is really out of control." "The
problem won't go away in a hurry and we are very keen
that it gets tackled in an open and forthright way.
There are enough unlicensed people in the market to
distort legitimate operations."
