Fitness
to drive rules under review
The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is considering new rules
that would result in doctors having to inform licencing
authorities of an illness or condition that could impair
their patient's ability to drive. The RSA is currently reviewing
fitness to drive regulations, and is looking at best practice
in other countries before updating the rules governing a
motorist's medical fitness to drive.
In New Zealand and some Australian states doctors are legally
obliged to pass on such information to the relevant licensing
authorities. In some other EU Member States, driving license
applicants are required to have a medical examination.
