Open
up Dublin Port Tunnel to buses - Transport Committee pleas
The Oireachtais committee on Transport wants Dublin's Port
Tunnel opened up to all buses to reduce increasing gridlock
in the capital. The influential all-party committee also wants
Dublin Bus to expand its fleet by 350 vehicles on a sub-contract
basis and for new marketing campaigns to break the car-dependency
culture among commuters.
In a detailed report to Transport Minister Noel Dempsey, the
committee says that traffic on the city's streets has trebled
in the past 15 years but adequate extra capacity has not been
provided. "It is more necessary than ever that more commuters
use buses,'' chairman Frank Fahey commented.
