Hauliers
fly below Gatso radar
Many hauliers are flying below the radar of the Gardai's
Gatso speed cameras, because the equipment is only is only
calibrated to detect vehicles doing in excess of 100 km
per hour. Trucks traveling above the 80 km per hour speed
limit for HGV's and less than 100 km for cars, are avoiding
detection, because the Gatso cameras currently in operation
only have one speed setting.
This means that Gatso speed cameras on roads with a speed
limit of 100km/h or higher cannot detect lorries or coaches
breaking the large vehicle specific limit of 80km/h, once
they stay within the road limit.
