German
Transport Minister warns of traffic meltdown
Germany is on the verge of a traffic meltdown, unless measures
are taken to regulate heavy truck transportation, Transport
Minister Wolfgang Tiefensee has warned. "A traffic
infarction is a credible scenario, if we do not react in
time," Tiefensee said. Tienfensee wants to invest €10
billion next year in road, rail and water transport infrastructures.
"On the most heavily used axes, we should have eight-
or ten-lane autobahns," the Transport Minister said.
He also suggested a toll for articulated trucks, but insisted
that German motorways must remain free for passenger cars.
